Days of rain and gray and clouds….even snuggled in my studio it makes me a bit sleepy. Just ventured outside to see these sweet Daffodils in my neighbors garden…signs of hope that spring will come!
Thought I would suggest a few signs of spring to have right in your “nests” to brighten things up…a few touches of yellow here and there can do wonders in defeating the winter doldrums.

I am always drawn to vintage illustrations…especially herbals.
One of my all time favorite illustrators is Elizabeth Blackwell and her incredible work published as “A Curious Herbal”.

While her illustrations and the heart felt detail behind them is wondrous, the fact that she went to work to publish these illustrations to help her husband out of debtors prison adds another layer of intrigue.
I use the opening page of her series as background and homage to this gifted, inspired artist. It makes me smile to think she might be very amused to know that her work, published in the mid 1700’s, lives on today in such a simple, but useful, form.

Endless thanks Mrs. Blackwell!

Someone once asked me how I created my collages.
While I would have loved to wax poetic on the creative process (which changes daily in my view), the honest answer is that some of my favorite collage were total accidents.
I could tell you about the time my work table collapsed in the middle of a design deadline….my nerves were completely frayed….in a total freak out now that days of work had just piled into one nasty mess on my floor…when I looked over and saw that the very design I had been struggling with had just assembled itself in the most wonderful way.
Well a similar thing happened recently. In an effort to clean up my forever untidy studio, I had some elements on a table that holds my dried ferns and leaves under it’s glass top.

Since I always start with switchplate designs, once the collage was finished, I had a wonderful new fern design for my client and for Full Circle Studio.

But wait, there’s more.
Now that I am doing a line of specialty pillows, a fabric from this collage was also made in to a large, square, cotton, delicious pillow!

And all this from a mess in my studio!
